StartQuest aka Space Crusade

StarQuest
StarQuest is an adventure board game designed by Steven Baker and produced by Milton Bradley and Games Workshop in the UK. It is in many ways the Sci-Fi version of HeroQuest. First made in 1990, it uses many of the concepts of the Games Workshop's Space Hulk and Warhammer 40,000 games, but has a simpler level of game play. StarQuest's less sophisticated level of play removes much of the complexity of the all encompassing Warhammer 40K rule sets and allows players of all ages to just have some fun gaming without having to read and abide by an encyclopedia of rules. Because of this many players from different continents have adopted StarQuest rules as the basis of their own home brewed Warhammer 40K universe game rules.

In Germany, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands, this game is known as StarQuest. It was know as Space Crusade in the UK, Finland, Ireland, France, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand. It was never sold in North America.
The theme of the game involves 1-3 squads of Imperium Space Marines breaching the hull of a space craft filled with aliens. The Space Marines must then fight off the aliens, attempt to complete a specific primary and secondary objective and then make it out alive. The player on the alien side's objective is to kill as many Space Marines as possible and raise hell. The one with the most point (generally the most kills) wins. As much of the game is left to chance and the throw of the dice, a player can be invincible and racking out an enemy body count one moment and then running in fear the next.
All in all, it is one of the simplest, most fun and violent board games ever made. Unfortunately, it isn't made anymore and the few copies of the game left are horded by a few collectors and can sell for US$500. But if you are lucky, you may be able to find a set in a thrift store...in the UK or Germany. You can also custom make your own boards, find some orcs and marines and borrow a copy of the rule book and you'll be on your way to playing a really fun board game!
Expansion Games and Sequels
Eldar Attack

A boxed expansion set that introduced Eldar with special abilities including psychic powers. This expansion pack allowed one extra player to control the Eldar miniatures, thus allowing the game to be played by 2-5 people.
Of note, one of the alien events allows the player to select a game board and rotate it to any degree. While this has interesting gameplay due to the line of sight required for range attacks, in practice it usually ends up with players knocking over doors and miniatures in the process, leading to many players simply ignoring this particular event.
Mission Dreadnought

Another boxed expansion set. This one gives the marine player access to additional space marine miniatures, boosting the squad to 6 space marines and the commander. Space marines may carry extra heavy weapons or the tarantula mobile turret.
The alien player gains extra heavy dreadnoughts, which are extremely powerful and capable of wiping out an entire squad. The last mission in the additional mission book allows the alien player to continuously construct additional dreadnoughts for more firepower from the dreadnought factory board.
The additional bulkhead doors and corridor tiles allows players to build more interesting board constructions, whereas the initial game is quite limited to either the square 2x2 mode or the long 4x1 mode.
White Dwarf

White Dwarf published two Space Crusade articles in the early 1990s.
The first discussed new rules and use of Terminators, Space Marine Scouts, Ork Mobs, Tyranids and Genestealer Hybrids, allowing players to use other Warhammer 40,000 miniatures with Space Crusade. The second article introduces one campaign named 'Renegade'.

Advanced Space Crusade

Advanced Space Crusade was a modular board game published in 1990 by Games Workshop and Milton Bradley. The premise of the game is that a number of Space Marine scout squads are boarding a Tyranid ship in order to sabotage its delicate internal "organs". The game is superficially similar to Space Hulk in that it uses 28 mm plastic Citadel Miniatures as play pieces, uses modular board pieces to represent the innards of the Hive ship, and has one player controlling the Marines while the other controls waves of Tyranids, but has no greater relationship to Space Crusade than any other game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Without the license from Milton Bradley, many of the components of Advanced Space Crusade were released in 1993's Tyranid Attack, a substantially different game.
White Dwarf also published three articles for Advanced Space Crusade

Computer Game

Gremlin Graphics Software Ltd. released a computer version of the game in early 1992. It was available on Atari ST, IBM PC (MS-DOS), Amiga, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amstrad and later received an expansion, The Voyage Beyond. It is a faithful conversion of the boardgame, with a board that could be viewed in 2D or isometric projection views (Barker, 1992).

Miniatures
You can use an assortment of figures and other items to represent your StarQueset Space Marines and Aliens. But if you lack imagination or want a really cool looking game and don't mind spending a lot of money, you will want to use the original StarQuest game pieces or use Games Workshop Warhammer 40K figures.
Space Marines

The original rules called for 4 Space Marines and 1 Sergeant per squad with a total of 3 squads. That makes 15 Space Marines total. The interchangeable arms allow each Marine to use a bolter, assault cannon, missile launcher and plasma gun. If you are playing Mission: Dreadnaught, you get two more Marines and 4 new Extra-Heavy weapons: the Las-cannon, the fusion gun, the conversion beam, and the Tarantula Mobile Support Weapon.

The original game weapons include:
Bolter
Assault Cannon
Missile Launcher
Plasma Gun
Heavy Bolter (for Marine Commander)
Power Axe and Bolt Pistol (for Marine Commander)
Power Sword and Power Glove (for Marine Commander)

Mission: Dreadnaught added:
Fusion Gun
Conversion Beam
Las-cannon
Tarantula Mobile Support Weapon
Space Marines are easy to acquire and you have several choices to choose from.
Option One
The Space Marine Tactical Squad will provide 10 Marines and a few heavy weapons (at least a missile launcher, a flamer, a meltagun, a plasma gun, and a bolt pistol)
![]()
Space Marine Devastator Squad provides 5 marines and a missile launcher, 1 multi-melta, 2 heavy bolters, 2 las-cannons and 2 plasma cannons.
This gives you a total of 15 Marines with various weapons. If you have to have miniatures that carry the same weapons as used by the Marines in your game, you will need an additional 6 Marines and heavy weapons. If you have to have properly geared Commanders, you will need a total of 9 Commanders, which is a bit silly.
Option Two
Warhammer 40,000: Assault on Black Reach
This boxed game contains a 112-page Warhammer 40K Rulebook, a 33-page Getting Started booklet, Dice, Templates, Range Rulers and almost 50 Citadel miniatures, including: a Space Marine Captain, 10 Tactical Space Marines, Five Space Marine Terminators, a Space Marine Dreadnought, an Ork Warboss, 20 Ork Boyz, five Ork Nobz and three Ork Deffkoptas. For Space Crusade, it's the best bang for the buck as you get enough Space Marines (as long as you are willing to use Terminators to represent regular Marines) for 3 squads, a dreadnaught and plenty of Orcs. You also get the rules to play Warhammer 40K, in case you are looking to expand.
![]()
![]()
Be aware that the Tactical squad in this set is designed to "snap together" and has less detail and versatility than the regular Space Marine Tactical Squad boxed set. The Black Reach models come with a body, jetpack and gun. The regular tactical set comes with various bodies front and back, separate arms and heads, separate lower bodies and weapons. The regular tactical set allows for more unique models and poses. Whereas the starter set allows you to quickly assemble your army and play Warhammer 40K or StarQuest.
Option Three
Blood Angels Death CompanyYou get five Marines with Blood Angel emblems.
Iron Hands Space Marine Squad
Comes with missile launder, flamer and bionic implants.
Space Marine Devastator Squad
This provides 5 marines and a missile launcher, multi-melta, 2 heavy bolters, 2 las-cannons and 2 plasma cannons.
This option allows for more unique looking squads.
Option 4

These seem to provide the most similar look to the origional StarQuest androids. The StarQuest Androids were more than likely the spawn of the Warhammer Necron.
Tau Fire Warrior Team
I feel that these look like "Androids" and will work fine for StarQuest. They however, do not look anything like the original StarQuest miniatures.
Dreadnaught

This doesn't really look like the original StarQuest Dreadnaught, but looks like a dreadnaught.
Space Marine Dreadnought
![]()
This is not my favorite choice, but it does come in the Warhammer 40,000: Assault on Black Reach set, so you might get it as a bonus. It also doesn't really seem possible for this to fit through a StarQuest door.
Epic Imperial Titans
Some of the Epic Imperial titans look similar to the original StarQuest Dreadnaught, but the scale may be off.
A 40k scale Space Marine is about 30mm tall. A Warlord class Battle Titan is about 55-70mm in height (depending on weapons fit). A Warhound is about 40mm tall.
Hellcat
Created for the game Kryomek, these may work fine. I'm not sure how the scale corresponds to StarQuest.
Robocop ED-209
The one above is a Kotobukiya Robocop Trilogy - ED 209 and is about 11 CM tall.

Chaos Knights

StarQuest came with:
4 chaos space marines
Chaos Space Marine Attack Squad
You can spend a lot on Chaos Space Marines, but this set gives you plenty...unless you decide to get crazy with your missions.
Chaos Space Marines
If you plan on full out head to head Space Marine combat, you may want a larger force to occupy your space hulk.
Orks and Gretchen

StarQuest came with:
8 orks
14 gretchin
Warhammer 40,000: Assault on Black Reach
This set has both Space Marines and Orcs and is a nice "economical" way to go if dollar store toys soldiers just don't cut it. You don't get Gretchin, but can use your imagination and save a few dollars.
Ork Boyz
Nice variety of Orcs.
Ork Gretchin
Don't forget the Gretchen. This set give your 10 of the 14 you may need.
Genestealers

StarQuest came with:
3 Genestealers
Tyranid Genestealer Brood
These are now known as Tyranid Genestealer Brood in Warhammer 40K.
Xenomorphs
Proper scaled miniatures of the Xenomorphs seen in the Alien's movie look pretty scary.
Eldar

If you are using the Eldar Attack rules and expansion set, you will need some Eldar.
Elder Attack expansion included:
1 Eldar Exarch
9 Eldar Warriors
9 shuriken Catapults
2 Las-Cannons
2 Shuriken Cannons
2 Missile Launchers
1 Shuriken Pistol
1 Force Wall base

Other Playing Piece Options
With a little bit of imagination, just about anything can be used to represent your Space Marines and Aliens. Toy soldiers, even cowboys and Indians, of different colors will work fine and you can even use Monopoly Game Pieces.

Paper chits (flat cardboard game pieces) with drawings of your figures will work, but can be difficult to move around unless they are thick enough to easily pick up.

Here are the full size icons used in one of the VASSAL modules. These, or something similar can be used on paper discs or plastic chips to represent various marines and aliens.
![]()
Standup cardboard or plastic cards with binder clip bases are a fine and economical step up from paper chits. A medium 1 1/4" binder clip is just a tad too big to fit perfectly within a single game square. But it's close enough if you don't have small 3/4" binder clips.

You can also glue your paper figures to a coin, model base or another piece of cardboard.

Lego Marines and Aliens

The 28mm Heroic scale used by Warhammer figures is off to begin with, but Lego scale is even more off. That said, Lego Minifigs can make really fun and versatile game pieces. See our Mini Castle Page for a scale calculator and scale charts.
Note that a StarQuest square is exactly 3 Lego studs wide, so a 3x2 or 2x2 plate will make a fine base for a Lego Minifig. You can also glue a 1x2 plate to a miniature base, 1 inch game chip, washer, US 5₵ nickel, etc. and attach your Lego minifig to that. Minifig Stands are also available in Australia and in the US. Lego also has "official" minifig stands (Minifig Stand, Hockey Stand). Also note that different colored plates can be used both as a minifig stand and as an identifier for which squad your minifig is in.

brickshelf 393350 also see dakkadakka 222203

Custom Helmets such as these from Arealight can turn any plain minifig into a space warrior.

Brickarms, Sidan minifig and other Lego customizers have weapons for your minifigs and will allow you to outfit your minifigs more realistic looking weapons.

You can also modify you Lego minifigs with paint or decals (How To) to create the look you are trying to achieve. See flickr legodecals for some ideas of close to ready Star Wars and WW2 decals that can be easily modified with Imperial Eagles, rank, unit insignia, skulls, etc. Then go to MinifigCustomizationNetwork and MinifigCustoms for templates. Then search for what has already been made (Space Marines, Clones) and start customizing your minifigs. Paint, sculpting and gluing on Warhammer model bits are also options if you want Lego minifigs that look like they were designed by Games Workshop.

Marines (Clones or Mandalorian Warriors or Space Marine). Many of the Knight and Space minifigs will work fine for Space Marines.

There are many ways to assemble a Star Wars Droideka Destroyer Droid from Lego parts and you can always purchase an official Lego Droideka. This doesn't really mirror the original StarQuest Dreadnought, but it fits in well with a Lego Star Wars version of StarQuest.

Dreadnoughts can be made out of all kinds of bricks and plates. A Clone Walker is an easy base to work with and can be had for almost nothing since these sets were bought out and horded by the many Clone Army builders who were stockpiling the clones and have piles of walkers to unload.
Lego Genestealers (Lord Greivious, Alien, Frenzy) are difficult to pull off, as the Genesealers are a step up from the Xenomorphs seen in the movie Aliens.

These alien nightmares were horrible creations that tapped into the deepest and darkest parts of the human psyche and combines many of the things that cause great fear in all of us. These bug like creatures climbed on the ceilings and hid in dark spaces, with sharp claws that can rip through metal and mouths full of long razor sharp teeth dripping with acid drool. You can't hurt or kill them because they are covered in armor and will bleed acid on you if you shot them; you can't outrun them as they are faster than you; and you can't hide because they can smell you and tear through anything you may seek refuge in. And as deadly and immortal as they are, they seek not to kill you quickly, but have their young slowly feed and mutilate on you from the inside out. Legos are just too cute to pull this off.

Mega Bloks
This Canadian copy of Lego, and other Lego compatible brick systems are available worldwide for a fraction of the cost of Lego merchandise.

Some of the Mega Blok figures look nice and are very economical when compared to Games Workshop miniatures or Legos. Some of these, such as the Halo and Dragon Universe series, are larger in scale than Lego minifigs, which are in turn larger in scale than the Games Workshop 28mm miniatures. You need to scale up your gameboard if you want these toys to "fit".
Game Boards
These are can be easily printed out on card stock and/or glued to plastic or board sheets.

Smaller boards and corridors can be used to breakup the 4 original game boards and make more interesting environments to explore and fight in. Here are what the Eldar Attack and Dreadnought Expansion sets provided:
Here is an example of a mission layout with 4 StartQuest game boards and a smaller gameboard from the Eldar Quest expansion.

Custom
With a minimal effort (depending on the level of quality you are shooting for), you can create your own starcraft maps. You can also download scans of the "official" game boards and print them out to recreate an "official" game environment.

Lego
You can do a lot with Lego.

Legos can be use to create all sorts of terrain. Spacecraft playscapes can be simple or complex and elegant.

Brickquest uses modular rooms and corridors similar to Space Hulk. The 4x4 Lego scaled spaces are larger than the 1 inch StarQuest gameboard spaces, by about 33%. So you will need a larger play surface for a comparable gameboard, while it will be somewhat easier to move and position your minfigs and/or miniatures.

Lego already has a game line similar to HeroQuest and uses a smaller scale with microfigs. This scale would allow for a more play area on a given table top while making gameplay more difficult. But if you are concerned about miniature detail, these microfigs can be purchased for very little.

Halo the board game uses a 3D setup that looks like large Legos.

Print Your Own Boards
There are several companies that sell paper terrain for wargaming or the files to print your own. And things have gotten pretty fancy over the last few decades now that people own computers and printers. You can print your own boards and glue them to foam boards for very professional results.

Walls and Doors
Being able to open and close doors adds a level of suspense when you are clearing rooms. You can't just lob a grenade into an adjacent room then run is and shoot everything when the door is closed. You have to walk up to the door and open it or in some cases bust through it first and then who knows what is going to jump out at you from the other side!
Spacecraft Doors

You get 4 walls and 24 doors with the StarQuest set.
These can be opened by Space Marines and open and closed by the alien forces
Bulkhead Doors

These heavy duty doors must be attacked in order for breach forces to pass through them. They have an armor level of 4, so you must roll higher than 4 with a ranged or hand to hand attack to destroy them. These come with the Mission Dreadnought Set.
Airlocks

You get three airlock doors and 3 docking boards with the StarQuest set. These aren't really necessary, but it's fun to line up your squad, dock, open the airlocks and yell "GO GO GO!" And then rush in with your attack force. The docking station is also where your team needs to go before the Alien team runs out of Alien Encounter cards as anyone left on the Space Hulk after that time is lost.
Eldar Psychic Walls

The Force Wall and Psychic Screen are used by Eldar to stop range weapons or to enter a space hulk. Rules and game pieces for these are found in the Eldar Attack expansion set.
Custom Doors

You can print or draw doors on card stock or plastic and apply a base. A binder clip (medium 1 1/4" shown) makes an easy to find reusable base for you door. Easy. Commercial propose made Card Stands or Game Stands are also available and are a little more elegant than a binder clip or tape and cardboard.

These cards designed by Mikael Brodu makes a pretty nice single sided English set. It is compete with cards for three other Space Marine squads (Raven Guard, Salamanders, Grey Knights).
ArtsCow and other printing services will be happy to print out professional quality cards for you.

Blips and Reinforcement Tokens
This adds a level of unknown to the game. Blips allow the Space Marine player to be aware of "life forms" on board the ship, much like using the scanners in the movie Aliens. Knowing that there are 5 "things" on the other side of a wall and that they are moving towards you can make life very interesting. In StarQuest, small double sided squares are used to represent the position of "Blips" on the ship. The blips can be a small Gretchen, a genestealer, a dreadnought, or even just a decoy! Once a play gets in line of sight of a "Blip" the identity of the blip is revealed and game play gets interesting.
StarQuest
StarQuest came with:
32 Blip Tokens
32 Reinforcement Tokens

Note that the reinforcement tokens some in three types. The Green ones represent the Green plastic Orcs. The Blue represents the Blue plastic Chaos warriors. The grey ones represent the Gray plastic Dreadnought and Androids. Flip the reinforcement token over and will have an alien of that type.

The blips all look the same, so as to hide the indentity of what it might be.

The Blips include:
1 Dreadnought (25)
4 Android (10)
1 Chaos Marine Commander (10)

DIY tokens can be easily formatted on a templated document and printed on card stock. You can also print out your tokens on regular or self adhesive (sticker) paper and affix them to the back of plastic chips or bottle caps. Flip the chip or cap over, and the hidden alien is revealed. The bottle caps can even be spray painted red to look like red blips. If you have the option to twist off your bottle caps, this prevents the cap from getting deformed by the bottle opener. Plastic chips stack better.
Deck of Card and Tokens
If you are looking for even less token hassle, you can use blank tokens (plastic chips, bottle caps, pebbles, beans etc.) to mark alien character location and then use a deck of cards with the aliens on them. To use this method of play, simply, draw a card and then replace the token with a figure or chit once a token enters the line of sight of a player.
And if you don't want to make special cards, you can use a regular (or pinochle) deck and a chart that shows what each card represents in the game.

Regular Deck with Jokers |
||||
| Card | Suit | Alien | Points | |
| Joker | Black | Dreadnought | 25 | |
| Joker | Red | Chaos Commander | 10 | |
| A | Spades | Android | 10 | |
| A | Hearts | Android | 10 | |
| A | Clover | Android | 10 | |
| A | Diamonds | Android | 10 | |
| K | Spades | Chaos Hvy Wpn | 10 | |
| K | Hearts | Chaos Marine | 5 | |
| K | Clover | Chaos Marine | 5 | |
| K | Diamonds | Chaos Marine | 5 | |
| Q or J | Any | Orc | 3 | |
| # | Any | Gretchen | 2 | |
In the example chart above, you will have way too many Gretchen (36) than the original game intended. So you will need to:
remove all cards numbered 2-6
remove 2 of the number 7 cards
Or
or have a ship full of Gretchen
Or
Change up your mix to whatever you like
|
Regular Deck |
||||
| Card | Suit | Alien | Points | |
| A | Spades | Dreadnought | 25 | |
| A | Hearts | Chaos Commander | 10 | |
| A | Clover | Chaos Hvy Wpn | 10 | |
| A | Diamonds | Remove | ||
| K | Any | Android | 10 | |
| Q | Any | Chaos Marine | 5 | |
| J or 10 | Any | Orc | 3 | |
| # | Any | Gretchen | 2 | |
In the example chart above, you will need to remove some cards from your deck or have way too many Gretchen (36) in your stack. To avoid this, you will need to:
remove Ace of Diamonds
remove all cards numbered 2-5
remove 2 of the number 6 cards
Or
reconfigure this chart
Or
or have a ship full of Gretchen
|
Pinochle or Double Deck |
|||
| Card | Suit | Alien | Points |
| A | Spades | Dreadnought | 25 |
| A | Hearts | Android | 10 |
| A | Clover | Android | 10 |
| K | Spades | Chaos Commander | 10 |
| K | Hearts | Chaos Hvy Wpn | 10 |
| K | Clover | Chaos Marine | 5 |
| K | Diamonds | Chaos Marine | 5 |
| Q | Any | Orc | 3 |
| J or 10 | Gretchen | Gretchen | 2 |
For the Pinochle example above, you will need to perform the following for a "stock" StarQuest mix of aliens:
remove one Ace of Spades (unless you want two lurking Dreadnoughts)
remove both Ace of Diamonds (unless you want six lurking Androids)
remove one King of Spades
remove one King of Hearts (unless you want 2 lurking marines with heavy weapons)
remove two cards numbered 10
You can of course create different tables for different scenarios. Examples include:
|
Orc Invasion |
||||
| Card | Suit | Alien | Points | Total |
| A | Spades | Orc Dreadnought | 25 | 1 |
| A, K, Q, J | Any (not A/Spades) | Orc | 3 | 15 |
| # | Any | Gretchen | 2 | 36 |
|
Necron Hulk |
||||
| Card | Suit | Alien | Points | Total |
| A | Any | Dreadnought | 25 | 4 |
| K, Q, J,10 | Any | Androids | 10 | 16 |
| # | Any | Decoy | 0 | 32 |
|

|
Chaos Ship 2 |
||||
| Card | Suit | Alien | Points | Total |
| A | Spades | Chaos Dreadnought | 25 | 1 |
| A | Hearts | Chaos Commander | 10 | 1 |
| A | Clover or Diamonds | Chaos Veteran (play like Commander) |
10 | 2 |
| K | Any | Chaos Hvy Wpn | 10 | 4 |
| Q, J | Any | Chaos Marine | 5 | 8 |
| # | Any | Decoy Sprit | 0 | 36 |
Rank and Honor Tokens
Increasing your commander's rank has real game benefits as you are able to draw more game cards the higher you climb in rank. The badges tokens are really unnecessary and can be replaced with a notepad.
Space Marine Rank and Honor Badges
Rank determines the number of Order Cards you receive at the beginning of your game. If you win a campaign, you are promoted to the next rank.
Honor Badges (actually "Honour Badges" as it this was a UK game) allow for more Equipment Cards at the beginning of each mission.

In your next game you must start off with a new Sergeant and no Honor badges. 11-30 An acceptable performance. You are awarded one Honor badge. 31-50 A commendable performance. You are awarded two Honor badges. 51 or more A heroic performance. You are awarded three honor badges. If you win the game you are automatically promoted one rank.
This is from the Combat Effectiveness Table on the back cover of the StartQuest Mission booklet.

Alien rank and Marks of Chaos work the same way as Space Marine rank and honor.

Eldar Honor
Eldar don't have rank or medals. They instead gain recognition when they prove their bravery. As their recognition increases, they gain skills and are presented ancestral weapons from their warlock.

Once an Exarch has become known as an Avatar, he can progress no further. If he gains any more recognition he must leave to join one of the higher spiritual groups or follow one of the other Warrior paths. At this point, your Exarch must leave the game and you must begin with a new Avenger Exarch.

Objective Tokens
These are used at the end of the mission for positive reinforcement and to help tally up your score.
Scanners
StarQuest has these cheesy plastic scanners that allow you to keep score. These can be replaced with a piece of paper and 6 sided regular dice to keep track of your commander's hip points. These plastic panels do have special slots for your rank and honor badges.
A control board such as the one above is a little more practical and easier to store than the scanner that comes with the game. These are in French, but ones in you language of choice would be easy to fabricate.
Custom Rank and Medal Tokens
If you have lost some of your rank and medal tokens, you can easily print out new ones on card stock. You can also just write or draw on generic poker chips to create more "fun" play pieces to work with during the game.
You can use simple plain plastic chips to represent Honor badges and Marks of Chaos. And you can of course get as fancy as you like by writing numbers on the chips or gluing on images of medals and such. More details on custom tokens can be found at boardgamegeek 507240 and boardgamegeek 466460.
Dice
You have to have dice to play this game. Included are 6 special dice. Three are red and three are white. The whites have a "1" on a single side and a "2" on a single side, while the other sides have a target with a "0" to represent a miss. The red ones have a "1" on a single side and a "2" on a single side like the white ones as well as "3" on a single side, while the other sides have a target with a "0" to represent a miss. The red dice are more likely to produce a hit and is able to hit with a 3.

If you lost your dice, have no fear. You can use regular dice and ignore the 4, 5 and 6s for red rolls and 3, 4, 5 and 6s for while rolls. This is also called D6-4 and D6-3 in old D&D terms. You simply subtract 4 from while throws and 3 from red throws.

Or, you can take a white and red marker and "black out" the higher numbers on the dice sides you aren't using. If you are using gaming dice that require filling in the numbers with crayon, you can use the same color crayon as the dice to "black out" the extra numbers and use a contrasting colored crayon to make the numbers you plan on using stand out.

Paper dice are an economical way of making custom dice. This has already been done for Doom Dice and other unique dice.
If you are somewhat anal retentive, you can print out stickers to cover the sides of your dice.

If you are a true DIY projectionist, you can drill out dice and apply press fit laminated stickers that have been punched to the right size. See boardgamegeek 529328 for details.

dicecreator. open-source-dice-making shows you how to make custom printed dice.

Lego Dice are an option if you are going for the Lego look. See brickprinter for custom engraved tiles.
And if you are a lazy perfectionist, you can purchase Space Crusade or StarQuest dice online or have them custom made by someone like:
