Wizards, Elves and Other Things Magical
There are many wonderful stories, legends, mythology and movies to enthrall one's mind.
Genres
High Fantasy or Epic Fantasy
High fantasy is defined as fantasy fiction set in an alternative, entirely fictional ("secondary") world, rather than the real, or "primary" world. The secondary world is usually internally consistent but its rules differ in some way(s) from those of the primary world.
Nikki Gamble distinguishes three subtypes of High Fantasy:
A setting in which the primary world does not exist (e.g. Discworld, The Wheel of Time, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Name of the Wind, The Lord of The Rings)
The secondary/parallel world(s) is entered through a portal from the primary world (e.g. Alice in Wonderland, The Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials, Xanth, The Dark Tower, Avantasia)
A distinct world-within-a-world as part of the primary world (e.g. Gods of Pegana, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter)
Low Fantasy
Low fantasy is characterized by being set in the primary, or "real" world, or a rational and familiar fictional world, with the inclusion of magical elements.
Sword and Sorcery (S&S)
Sword and sorcery is a sub-genre of fantasy and historical fantasy, generally characterized by sword-wielding heroes engaged in exciting and violent conflicts. An element of romance is often present, as is an element of magic and the supernatural. Unlike works of high fantasy, the tales, though dramatic, focus mainly on personal battles rather than world-endangering matters. Many are B movies with lots of skin.
There are a good many fantasy type movies out there. Some are worth watching and some are even worth watching for children. The following is a basic list of what is available. In no ways does the entry here signify that a movie is worth watching or appropriate for your children.
