Grail Diary Pages

There are over 90 unique diary pages and page versions were used in the Grail Diaries used in the Last Crusade movie. Most of these were repeated to fill the final A and B movie props. The Computer Game Diary had it's own 63 pages, giving anyone interested in creating there own diary a good start, no matter what style of diary they are working on. And for those interested in creating their own unique diary, there are several good source documents and a good deal of Grail lore to tap into.
Official Hero Diary Page Order
Those with access to privileged information and who spent years staring at VHS and later DVD stills feel that the Hero Grail Diary used in the film was made up of 4 repeating signatures of 16 pages (4 sheets folded in half). Several additional page inserts were pasted in or otherwise inserted to create what is believed to be the complete 282 page Hero Diary.
A very comprehensive page order was compiled by Marcin Szyniszewski at sites.google page-order and is discussed throughout COW 24961:

The Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure computer game came with a "Grail Diary" with story plot and hits to solve the game (as well as make the game more difficult to pirate). You get 64 pages of text and images all from the Lucasfilm franchise, making the text somewhat "official" and more or less relevant with the storyline/plot of The Last Crusade movie. The physical book itself is 17x15cm and included about 10 drawings as well as a few inserts.

The Best of the Lucasfilm Archives

This photo book has a good many photos, sketches, paintings from the Star Wars and Indiana Jones Trilogies. It has several photos of the Grail Diary, and you will be able to make out some of the text on the 14 sets shown.
More "official" glimpses of text can be found on our Official Grail Diary Pages and Discovered Grail Diary Pages pages.
Diary Style
There are a number of ways to set up a Grail Diary reproduction. The "Hero Diary" approach is to replicate the A-prop (aka Hero Prop) page for page. Another popular approach is to create a "Story Diary" that is setup to follow and document Dr. Jones' thoughts as he quests the Holy Grail. And yet another approach is to create a "Professor's Journal" that includes clues and notes that would aid in the search for the Holy Grail.
Hero Prop
Guidelines for page setup and organization is limited to a few publications, movie stills and what the few who have seen the actual props are willing to share with the world. Luckily, most of the information required recreate a Hero Prop is available on this site and others. The repeat signatures of the Hero prop makes it unreadable and rather boring.
Story Diary
The Computer Game Grail Diary is setup in a story format. It was perhaps easier to fabricate many pages of story text instead of filling the diary with random Grail related notes and drawings. A story is also more readable than a collection of notes and the computer game diary was created more for a video game than a true recreation of the Hero Prop or what Dr. Jones may have created. Many have created fun Story Grail Diaries.
Professor's Journal
How would a professor of Medieval History keep track of his thoughts regarding a life long quest? A "dear diary" format is possible, but would fill more than a single diary. A pocket sized journal with notes may be more appropriate. This may not be as readable as story type diary, but could contain a great deal of information and valuable notes. It would also not be as "boring" as a true Hero Prop with its repeated pages. And without a storyline to follow, it might be easier to create and organize as long as you have all the notes, drawings and inserts you need to fill the pages of such a journal.
Fabricated Text
Unless you have a copy of the true prop and want an exact copy of it, you will have a good deal of empty space in your Grail Diary to fill. This will require some text and illustrations that you think Dr. Henry Jones Sr would have in his diary during his life long hunt for the Grail.
The first step in this process is to perform some research. This can include study of the "Indy" timeline from the various Indiana Jones publications (movies, TV series, comics), source books used to create the prop diaries, and other Grail related text and publications. It can also include study of this and other Grail Diary web resources.
Jones Timelines
Creations of "Indy" accurate journal will require knowledge of the Jones timeline. It is important to note that the Indy stories, although occasionally somewhat related to actual real people and historical events, are works of fiction and made for entertainment. There are conflicting timeline and event issues as they relate to weaving all the Indy stories together as well as historical events into the Grail Diary timeline. And if you don't fret these discrepancies, life will be better.
Henry Jones Sr.
What did Dr. Jones Sr. do during his life? You will need to know a little bit about is life's timeline if you want to make "accurate" fictional text.

Example of Diary timeline modifications to allow for continuity with the Young Indy series:
Changed the 'Auberge d'Ecune, Cantaney' date to 8th September 1908 (to within weeks - of Corey Carrier Picasso episode)
'Gasthofff "Truebselig" Klassheim' entry to November 16th, 1908 (to within days/week's travel of Vienna for Princess Sophie episode)
Created an entry for Jerusalem for 18th June, 1909, as there's no way Henry would be at the centre of Christendom and not research the Grail. Slipped in a reference to Abner Ravenwood, too, without being specific as to what happened to him and Indy - but made Henry not amused about it so that Ravenwood tries to help his quest by way of apology. (Ties with unmade 3rd season YI story)
"It pleases me that Al-Jawf still thinks of me.." text I have being written in Stockholm, Sweden on December 5th, 1909 (ties with another unmade 3rd season story)
"I have been able to meet Prince Kassim" to January 16th 1910 (Ties with Benares 1910 story)
Created Kalabaka, Greece August 20th 1910 to tie with second half of 'Travels With Father.' I have Henry being given 'The Cobblestones' and 'The Pendulums' illustrations here.
Have Miss Seymour and Indy travelling with Codirolli on the Titanic. Given the date - within a month of Anna's death - I had 'Junior' being sent away to England to help Anna rest and returning (at his own insistence) because she's taken a turn for the worse.
Grail History
Dr. Henry Jones Sr. was on the hunt for information regarding the Grail. Some of the manuscripts that he may have read have since become lost or destroyed through, fires, wars, decomposition or other insults of time. But with internet and public library systems, you will have easier assess to some the this information than Dr. Jones Sr. would have in the early 1900's.
The Grail: Quest for the Eternal

This is a required book for any serious Do It From Scratch diary prop replicator/maker. It appears that a good amount of the text in the real Grail Diary props came from this book (remember that the diary was actually made by a prop maker and not by Dr. Jones himself). It contains 96 pages with 118 illustrations (15 in color). It also discusses aspects of the Grail, which may help with content.

Movie and Historical Timeline Anomalies
Hagia Sofia Translation
The Hagia Sofia is referred to by "Henry" (Las Mesas May 22, 1912 Computer Game Diary) as the basilica of St. Sophia.
Note that in Greek, Sophia means wisdom. So the Hagia Sofia is actually a Basilica to the Wisdom of God.
At the time that Henry was in Constantinople, the structure was a converted Mosque. All of the Christian Mosaics were covered up as no images would be allowed in a Mosque (they are still uncovering these now that the building was a Museum). The building would not become a museum open to the public until 21 years after Henry's visit to Constantinople.
1938 Zeppelin Flight after 1937 Hindenburg
The tragic Hindenburg event ended intercontinental zeppelin flights in 1937. Flights did not start again until 14 September 1938 with LZ 130 "Graf Zeppelin II". In the movie, the Joneses flew onboard a Zeppelin on 1 April 1938.
1909 Iraq
Note that the address on the Al Jawf letter is wrong. Iraq did not exist as a country until after WW1. Up until then Baghdad was in Mesopotamia which was a province of the Ottoman Empire (1533–1918). This letter is dated 1909.
1920 Soviet Union
September 29, 1920 entry in the Grail Diary, States:
"Hostile borders have been no barrier to him nor has revolution, as he was able
to slip into Constantinople (or as we now must call it, Istanbul!) and Russia
(or as we now must call it, the Soviet Union!!) and bring out some of the most
amazing items."
Russia was not called the Soviet Union until 1922. At the time of this
diary entry, Russia would have been called the Russian Soviet Federative
Socialist Republic.
The sentence should therefore read:
"Hostile borders have been no barrier to him nor has revolution, as he was able
to slip into Constantinople (or as we now must call it, Istanbul!) and Russia
(or as we now must call it, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic!!)
and bring out some of the most amazing items."
1933 100 French Frank
The computer game diary suggests that Dr. Henry Jones is in France in the 1920s, so a 1933 bank note doesn't fit this timeline.
1943 Data on George Washington Quote
"By 1943 the marriage rate had dropped down to 11.8 per 1000."
thegrid graildiarymarriagestatinsert2.jpg COW 35931
Jehovah Spelling
Jehovah is spelled Iehovah in Latin. However medieval languages (Latin or vernacular) had neither official rules nor the letter 'J'. It was not until the sixteenth century that the French humanist Pierre de la Ramée proposed to use the 'J' as a separate letter distinct from the 'I'. The 'J' could therefore not have been a trap at the time the test was constructed.
Graduation and Location Timeline
Henry senior graduates from Oxford in 1899, most people start their diary in 1898 in New Haven
